What are the endomorphins?
Endomorphin 1 and 2 are amidated tetrapeptides isolated from mammalian brain tissue. They are reported to bind the mu-opioid receptor with high affinity and unusual selectivity, and they differ from one another at only a single amino acid position.
Where do endomorphins come from?
No precursor protein or gene has been conclusively identified for either peptide, which distinguishes them from enkephalins and dynorphins. Their biosynthetic route remains under discussion, and this uncertainty should be kept in mind when interpreting endogenous-role experiments.
Why are truncated fragments supplied?
Fragments such as endomorphin 1 (2-4) and endomorphin 2 (2-4) correspond to expected peptidase cleavage products. They are used as negative controls, as standards in metabolism experiments, and to define which residues are required for receptor recognition.
