Endokinins — frequently asked

What are endokinins?
Endokinins are tachykinin peptides encoded by the human TAC4 gene, designated A, B, C and D. Endokinins A and B end in the classical tachykinin motif shared with substance P, while endokinins C and D have a divergent C-terminal sequence.
Why is endokinin A/B listed as one item?
Endokinin A and endokinin B differ only in their N-terminal extension and share an identical C-terminal region. Because that shared region carries the receptor-binding motif, catalogs commonly supply it as a single endokinin A/B peptide for pharmacology work.
What are endokinins studied for?
Endokinin A/B is used in tachykinin receptor assays as an NK1 agonist and compared with substance P in vascular, smooth muscle and immune cell preparations. Endokinins C and D are studied mainly because their receptor targets remain uncertain.
