What is ELABELA?
ELABELA, also called toddler or APELA, is a peptide hormone described as a second endogenous ligand of the apelin receptor. It is encoded by a short open reading frame that was initially annotated as a non-coding transcript.
How does it differ from apelin?
Both are reported to act at the apelin receptor, but their sequences are unrelated and their expression patterns differ, with ELABELA prominent in embryonic, placental and renal tissue. Comparative signalling studies between the two ligands are therefore common.
What do ELA-32, ELA-21 and ELA-11 refer to?
They are processed forms of the precursor with different N-terminal lengths, all sharing the C-terminal region considered important for receptor binding. Researchers compare them to ask whether length affects potency, stability or signalling bias in a given assay.
