What is CRSP?
CRSP stands for calcitonin receptor-stimulating peptide, a group of peptides in the calcitonin and CGRP superfamily originally identified in the pig. Three members, CRSP-1 to CRSP-3, are described, and reagents are supplied as porcine sequences.
How does CRSP differ from CGRP?
Reported data indicate that CRSP-1 acts at the calcitonin receptor, whereas CGRP signals mainly through receptor complexes involving receptor activity-modifying proteins. That difference in receptor preference is the main reason CRSP is treated as a separate family.
Why are only porcine sequences listed?
Functional CRSP genes have been described in pig and some related species but not in human or rodents. Comparative studies therefore use porcine peptides, and researchers should note this limitation when extrapolating findings to other experimental models.
