What is copeptin?
Copeptin is the C-terminal glycopeptide of the pre-provasopressin precursor. Processing of that precursor releases vasopressin, neurophysin II and copeptin in equal molar amounts, so copeptin levels are reported to track vasopressin secretion without requiring direct measurement of the hormone.
Why is copeptin measured instead of vasopressin?
Vasopressin is small, largely bound to platelets and cleared quickly, making direct assays difficult. Copeptin is described as considerably more stable in sample matrices, so researchers use it as a practical surrogate analyte when studying osmoregulation and stress-related vasopressin release.
Which species variants exist?
Human and rat copeptin sequences are the principal listings, offered unlabeled, biotinylated or as antibodies and kits. The sequences differ between species, so an assay validated for human samples should not be assumed to quantify rodent copeptin accurately without checking.
