What is CNTF?
CNTF is a cytokine of the interleukin-6 family, first identified by its ability to keep chick ciliary ganglion neurons alive in culture. It is reported to act through a receptor complex of CNTFR-alpha, gp130 and LIFR-beta, activating JAK/STAT and related pathways.
Why is CNTF used in research?
It is widely applied as a culture supplement supporting survival and differentiation of motor, sensory, retinal and glial cells. Investigators also use it to study gp130-family receptor assembly and STAT3 signalling, and in rodent models addressing food intake and energy expenditure.
Which forms and species are available?
