What is chromogranin A?
Chromogranin A is an acidic protein stored in the dense-core secretory granules of neuroendocrine cells. It is cleaved into numerous smaller peptides during granule maturation and secretion, and is co-released when those granules are discharged.
Which chromogranin A peptides are commonly studied?
Frequently studied fragments include pancreastatin, catestatin, the vasostatins, WE-14 and serpinin. Each is reported to have its own activity profile, so most experiments specify the exact fragment and residue numbering rather than the parent protein.
Why is chromogranin A used as a marker?
Because it is abundant in dense-core vesicles across many neuroendocrine cell types and is released with their contents, it is widely used to identify neuroendocrine tissue in staining work and as an analyte in immunoassay development.
