CC Chemokines (CCL) — frequently asked

What defines a CC chemokine?
CC chemokines carry two adjacent conserved cysteines near the N-terminus, distinguishing them from CXC chemokines where a single residue separates the pair. They share a disulfide-stabilised fold and signal through CC chemokine receptors on responsive leukocytes.
What is eotaxin / CCL-11?
Eotaxin, formally CCL-11, is a CC chemokine widely studied for its reported role in recruiting eosinophils. It is frequently measured by ELISA in tissue fluid, lavage samples and culture supernatant in experimental models of allergic and inflammatory responses.
Why is chemokine handling important?
Activity depends on correct disulfide folding and on an intact N-terminal region, which is often required for receptor activation. Repeated freeze-thaw cycles, adsorption to plastic surfaces and proteolysis during sample processing are common causes of variable results.
