Beta-Casomorphins — frequently asked

What are beta-casomorphins?
Beta-casomorphins are short peptides released when bovine beta-casein is enzymatically hydrolysed. They are classed as food-derived opioid peptides because their N-terminal tyrosine and proline-rich sequence resemble the message region of endogenous opioid peptides.
What is morphiceptin?
Morphiceptin is the amidated tetrapeptide corresponding to beta-casomorphin (1-4). It is a well-characterised mu-opioid selective ligand used as a reference compound in receptor binding assays and structure-activity studies of opioid peptide analogs.
Why is the des-Tyr1 analog supplied?
Removing the N-terminal tyrosine is reported to abolish opioid receptor binding, since that residue is essential to the recognition motif. The des-Tyr1 peptide therefore serves as a sequence-matched negative control in binding and functional experiments.
