Calmodulin (CaM) — frequently asked

What is calmodulin?
Calmodulin is a small, highly conserved intracellular calcium sensor of about 148 residues, built from two EF-hand lobes joined by a flexible linker. Calcium binding exposes hydrophobic surfaces that let it engage helical motifs in many partner proteins.
Why is calmodulin researched?
It is reported to regulate a broad set of kinases, phosphatases, synthases and ion channels, so it appears repeatedly in calcium signalling work. It is also used practically as an affinity reagent through calmodulin-binding peptide fusion tags.
Which variants are available?
Recombinant human calmodulin is the standard item, and because the sequence is nearly identical across vertebrates it is generally used across species contexts. EF-hand mutants with individual calcium sites disabled and labeled preparations are also listed.
