What are BMP-derived peptides?
They are short synthetic sequences taken from defined surface regions of bone morphogenetic proteins, which are TGF-beta superfamily growth factors. Bone forming peptides such as BFP-1 and BFP-2 derive from regions of BMP-2 including receptor-contacting epitopes.
Why use peptides rather than the whole protein?
Full-length BMPs are large, disulfide-linked dimers that are costly to produce and difficult to immobilise. Short peptides are easier to synthesise, conjugate to scaffolds and modify chemically, though reported potency is generally lower than the parent protein.
