Betatrophin / ANGPTL8 — frequently asked

What is betatrophin?
Betatrophin is a secreted protein encoded by the ANGPTL8 gene, also called C19orf80 or lipasin. It is produced mainly in liver and adipose tissue and is related to the angiopoietin-like family, though it lacks their fibrinogen-like domain.
Is betatrophin really a beta cell factor?
The original report suggested a role in beta cell proliferation, but later studies failed to confirm it. Most current work examines the protein in lipid metabolism, so the name should be regarded as historical rather than descriptive of established function.
What are the numbered fragments used for?
Regions such as (22-83), (84-138) and (139-198) span the protein and are used as immunogens, as calibration antigens and as capture or detection targets in sandwich immunoassays. Human and mouse numbering differ slightly, so sequences are listed separately.
