Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) — frequently asked

What is BDNF?
BDNF is a neurotrophin that acts as a non-covalent homodimer of a roughly 119-residue cystine knot polypeptide. It is produced from a proBDNF precursor and signals mainly through the TrkB receptor tyrosine kinase in neuronal systems.
Why is recombinant dimer supplied rather than a peptide?
Neurotrophin activity depends on the folded, disulfide-bonded dimeric structure, which short synthetic peptides cannot reproduce. Recombinant protein is therefore the standard format for culture supplementation and receptor signalling experiments in this family.
How is BDNF measured in research samples?
ELISA kits are the usual approach for serum, plasma, cerebrospinal fluid and conditioned media. Because assays can differ in whether they detect mature BDNF, proBDNF or both, matching the kit specification to the research question is important.
