Apolipoprotein E (ApoE) & Related Apolipoproteins — frequently asked

What is apolipoprotein E?
ApoE is a 299-residue lipoprotein component with separate receptor-binding and lipid-binding domains. It circulates on remnant and very low density lipoprotein particles and is also produced locally in the brain, largely by astrocytes.
Why are the isoforms studied separately?
ApoE2, E3 and E4 differ at only two residues but are reported to differ appreciably in receptor affinity, lipoprotein preference and domain interaction. The E4 allele is a long-standing focus in neurodegeneration risk research, so isoform-matched reagents matter.
Which apolipoproteins are available?
Recombinant human ApoE2, ApoE3 and ApoE4 are the core items, generally supplied lipid-free. Related family members such as apolipoprotein A-I and J may also be listed, along with antibodies and ELISA kits for quantification.
