Apidaecin — frequently asked

What are apidaecins?
Apidaecins are short proline- and arginine-rich antimicrobial peptides from the honeybee. They are produced from precursor genes containing tandem repeats, which generates several closely related natural variants that differ at only one or two positions.
How do apidaecins differ from lytic antimicrobial peptides?
Reported studies describe a largely non-lytic mechanism involving uptake into bacterial cells and engagement of intracellular targets, with recent work centred on the ribosome. This contrasts with peptides such as cecropins that primarily permeabilise bacterial membranes.
Why are several sequence variants offered?
The apidaecin gene repeats encode variants differing in single residues or in proline-rich segment length. Supplying the set allows direct comparison of potency and spectrum, which is useful for structure-activity studies and for selecting a reference peptide for screening.
