Amyloid Beta S26C Cross-Linked Dimers — frequently asked

What is an S26C amyloid beta dimer?
It is an engineered peptide in which serine 26 is replaced by cysteine, letting two chains be joined by a disulfide bond. The result is a covalent, defined dimer rather than a transient non-covalent assembly.
Why use cross-linked dimers instead of natural oligomers?
Naturally formed oligomers are heterogeneous and interconvert quickly, making experiments hard to reproduce. A covalently stabilised dimer provides a single defined species that can be prepared consistently and compared against monomer and fibril preparations.
Which sequence lengths are available?
Dimers based on the 40-, 42- and 43-residue amyloid beta sequences are supplied. Because C-terminal length strongly influences aggregation behaviour in reported studies, comparing dimers of different lengths is a common experimental design.
