What is alpha-synuclein?
It is a 140-residue presynaptic protein encoded by SNCA, generally described as natively unfolded in solution and helical when bound to acidic membranes. It is the principal protein component of Lewy bodies in synucleinopathy tissue.
Why is it researched?
Its assembly into oligomers and amyloid fibrils is central to synucleinopathy research, so recombinant protein is used as substrate in aggregation and seeding assays, in membrane binding work, and as standard and immunogen for antibody and ELISA development.
