Allatostatins — frequently asked

What are allatostatins?
Allatostatins are insect and other invertebrate neuropeptides named for their reported inhibition of juvenile hormone synthesis in the corpora allata. Three structurally distinct groups, designated A, B and C type, share that functional name but differ completely in sequence motif.
Why are allatostatins studied?
They are central tools in insect endocrinology and invertebrate neurobiology, with published effects on juvenile hormone output, visceral muscle contraction, feeding and circadian circuits. Their receptors also resemble vertebrate somatostatin and galanin receptors, supporting comparative pharmacology work.
Which types and species are available?
Catalogs list numbered A-type allatostatins including Drosophila sequences, B-type myoinhibitory peptides, and C-type peptides such as [Gln1]-allatostatin C. Because potency varies between insect species, product entries should be checked for the source organism studied.
