AF9 (Nematode FMRFamide-Related Peptide) — frequently asked

What is AF9?
AF9 is a member of the numbered AF series of FMRFamide-related peptides described in parasitic nematodes. Peptides of this class are short and amidated, and the family is defined by a conserved C-terminal arginine-phenylalanine amide motif.
Why is the [Tyr0] analog supplied?
Adding a tyrosine at the N-terminus provides a site for radioiodination without altering the native sequence. This allows preparation of an iodine-125 labeled tracer for quantitative binding experiments while keeping the parent peptide intact.
How are AF peptides used in research?
They are used chiefly in isolated nematode muscle and whole-worm preparations to examine neuromuscular modulation, and in receptor binding studies. Because members of the series differ in reported activity, results are described peptide by peptide.
