What is ACTH?
ACTH is a 39-amino-acid pituitary peptide processed from proopiomelanocortin. It is best known as the signal that stimulates adrenocortical cells through the melanocortin-2 receptor, and it forms part of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis.
Why are ACTH fragments studied?
Truncated forms such as ACTH (1-24) and shorter N-terminal fragments are used to identify which residues support receptor activation and which are recognised by particular antibodies. Fragment comparisons also help interpret assay cross-reactivity.
Which species forms are available?
Human and rat or mouse ACTH are the most commonly supplied variants. Because the C-terminal region differs between species while the N-terminal region is conserved, matching the species to the model is important for antibody-based measurements.
